Without further ado, let's find out how to get unicorn hair.

Materials and preparation

Unicorn hair is not as easy to achieve as some people might try to make you believe. Nevertheless, it is not a complex and unattainable task either. If you want to have colorful unicorn hair, start by gathering the materials. You will need:

  • hair dyes (pink, purple and blue)

  • color developer

  • a bleach kit

  • bleach

  • several brushes (one for each color)

  • bowls (one for each color)

  • latex (or plastic) gloves

  • a towel (or a top you no longer wear)

  • shampoo

  • a rehydrating conditioner.

It is true that unicorn hair is very trendy right now. However, it's a good idea to think twice before taking the plunge. Before adopting a permanent dye, it is advisable to try a temporary dye first. This way, you'll know if the colors suit you or not. You can try different combinations until you find the right one. There is no real big preparation to do. You just need to be ready, and go for it.

Choosing colors and huesΒ

Traditionally, unicorn hair is done in pastel pink, purple and blue. But there's nothing stopping you from using navy shades if you like that.

Ideally, you should use colors that go well with your skin tone. This way, you will also be much more original compared to others. Even if the mix of pink, blue and purple is the most popular combination, this formula may not necessarily go with your skin tone. Feel free to change the shades to match your skin tone.

  • If you have very fair skin, go for warm colors (peach, tangerine or light pink).

  • If your skin is just fair, lavender, turquoise or any other cool shade would be more suitable.

  • For those with medium skin, jewel tones are best (ruby or amethyst).

  • Matte skin should always be accompanied by hair with a saturated hue (sapphire, aquamarine or emerald).

  • Darker skins can stick to a pastel hue.

  • For very dark skin, darker shades are also the most suitable.

Hair bleachingΒ

Before applying color to your hair, it is recommended that you first bleach your hair. Hair bleaching will bring out the colors better. However, it is a rather aggressive treatment. If you have dry and brittle hair, it is better to skip this step.

To start, protect your clothes, skin and work area. Cover the floor with plastic or newspaper. Drape an old towel or shirt that you won't be wearing again and put on a pair of gloves.

In a bowl, pour your bleach and several volumes of developer (between 10 and 30). Always choose quality products. If you have light hair, 10 parts should be more than enough. For dark hair, 20 volumes of developer will be necessary. For dark hair, you will need 30 volumes.

Using a brush, apply the bleach, making sure to start at the ends and work your way down to the roots. For ease of application, split your hair into sections. Then cover with a shower cap and wait for the product to take effect. Check the condition of your hair every 5 minutes. Once your hair has reached a light blonde color, wash it immediately. Shampoo and cold water should do the trick.

Application of the dye

After bleaching your hair, it's best to wait a while before applying any other harsh products, including hair dye. Once this time has passed, you will have to decide whether to apply permanent or temporary hair dye.Β

  • Permanent hair dye

Before applying permanent hair dye to your hair, protect everything around it (your skin, clothes, floor, hands, etc.). If you plan to dye your hair all the way to the roots, apply petroleum jelly to the areas of skin that may come in contact with the product.

Prepare each shade in separate containers, and use different brushes for each.

This time, you'll want to start the dye at the roots and gradually work your way to the tips. If you don't want to touch the roots, you can start at mid-length.

Section your hair to make it easier to apply the different colors.

Let the colors set (about 30 minutes to 2 hours), and rinse your hair with cold water.Β

  • Temporary Dye

Temporary dye is not really suitable for full coloring. Proceed exactly the same way as with permanent dye, but instead of coloring your hair all the way to the roots, stick to the ends only. This time you can wash it out with shampoo, but the color will fade as you go.

Now you know how to get unicorn hair. You know that you will have to use quite aggressive products, hence the need to take the precautions we have presented. But when you see the results, it will be well worth the effort.
